°°°°°°°°°°°°°

..2025 was a rough one for all. Still hoping that we'll all get wiser - and more peaceful. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

But - we kept playing the music, and talking to people. A few memorable musical highlights was working with Almut Kühne, Francesco Bigoni and dancer Bee Brown. A concert at H15 Studio completely went through the roof.

Releasing the Confluencia album in the TUNGEMÅL series on ILK Music was a true highlight. The way Susana Santos Silva, Simon Simon Toldam and Ingar Zach got involved with my music was humbling. Beautiful release concert extravaganza at Hotel Cecil with the entire BABEL ensemble + Viktoria Søndergaard. The Quartet line-up also visited Cologne Jazzweek and LOFT Köln.

Reviews got pretty crazy all over:

❤︎❤︎❤︎❤︎❤︎❤︎ (6/6) ” ..a new central work in Danish music” and “A remarkable achievement that sets both my body and mind in motion. .. just look, hope is still alive.” – David Dyrholm, Politiken (DK)

“What makes the album truly powerful is what many experimental lack: Space for contemplation and dialogue with the listener. Tungemål dares to be experimental without overpowering itself”. - Simon Heggum, Seismograf (DK)“

It is a work that is as musical as it is architectural and a coherent whole” - Mattheiu Jouan, Citizen Jazz (Fr)

★★★★★★ 6/6“As a listener, you allow yourself to be led through the rooms, constantly drawn toward discovering what lies around the next corner."Jørgen Nielsen, All That (DK)

★★★★☆".. Solborg offers nine aesthetically compelling avant-garde chamber pieces that leave a bold imprint due to their originality." - Filipe Freitas, JazzTrail.

Later I was nominated for a Danish Music Award Jazz - Composer of the Year, for the work with Confluencia. Great evening by Jazz Danmark.

Thanks again - we truly appreciate that you took the time to listen to our work.

Meeting amazing saxophonist Michaela Turcerová on stage felt like a stroke of luck. We visited venues in Denmark and France, incl. the great Jazzdor festival in Strasbourg with Simon Toldam. More will come from that, stay tuned.

An encounter with author Amina Elmi Albertslund combining music, poetry and croquis was super intense.

Picking up on the Solborg / Banke / Heebøll trio and adding Viktoria Søndergaard for a beautiful evening at the Dänische Botschaft in Deutschland. More to come in 2026.

Other parts of 2025 life included a new position teaching composition at RMC - Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium. As chair of the collective and Label ILK Music, the board and I worked intensely with funding, our new label manager and investigating new venues incl. an exciting new collaboration with the venue KU.BE at Frederiksberg. Looking forward.

The year ended with a sad and beautiful goodbye to the great Marilyn Mazur. ..safe travels Marilyn, I know you're still dancing and playing out there somewhere.

The next weeks I'll have my hands full with preparations for Vinterjazz concerts, new 2026 releases and works for 2026/27. (*☻-☻*). More on all that in spring.

Take care - talk to your neighbour and people you don't know.

Release

ANDERS BANKE · TENOR SAXOPHONE & BASS CLARINET MARK SOLBORG · GUITAR BJØRN HEEBØLL · DRUMS & PERCUSSION ANGELS? Angels come in many shapes. What for some is heaven-sent is the devil in disguise to others - while reality might be found somewhere in between (?). The pure of hart and righteous, those who help in hours of need, the fallen, the vengeful, the sanctimonious, the self-sacrificing, messengers and contact-personel between earth, heaven and hell, dead canonized forefathers, saints, archangels....and those who sing. Whether Mark Solborg, Anders Banke and Bjørn Heebøll qualifies as pure angels or fallen dittos must be judged by the listener. But granted; all three have, during the course of their comprehensive and impressive work, promoted contact between man and music. Together and separately the trio has performed and recorded with an almost eclectic gathering of artists across genres. Herb Robertson, Evan Parker, Axel Dörner, New Jungle Orchestra, Niels Skousen, Bisse, Slaraffenland, Copenhagen Art Ensemble, Peter Brötzman, Lotte Anker, Danish Radio Bigband, Paul Lovens, Egberto Gismonti, Django Bates, John Tchicai, Hermeto Pascoal, Simon Toldam, Susana Santos Silva, Mark Solborg 4, Jan Sonnergaard, Pia Juul, moLd, Firebirds, Peter Bruun’s All Too Human and many, many others.. The approach of the trio is, in many ways, rounded and inspired by this celestial musical kaleidoscope. Thorough attentive, synergistic and dynamic interplay, the focal point is always at how to redeem the material at hand in the strongest possible way - regardless of genre. Over time they have developed a deep mutual understanding and - in the words of some listeners - telepathic playing style. As if all in the group breathes through the same lungs - and create transparent elastic music. This is a place of thorough, respectful, curious listening and musical talks. The last years the group has worked two main agendas: A - Original works focusing on melody, counterpoint and complex rhythm B - Interpretations of selected favourite songs by strong historical voices On Angels both are intertwined in an intense and dynamic three-way conversation. All contribute with equal voices - and on these tracks in particular you can hear Heebølls energetic and ultra melodic answers to Solborg and Bankes playfull interwoven lines and melodies. Besides Albert Aylers elegiac “Angels” you can experience Nick Drakes “Harvest Breed” exposed to bass clarinet, a rocking version of Monks “Misterioso” and “Crepuscule With Nellie” - mixed with new works like “Rigors Remain” and “Early Morning Bells” by Solborg and “Den 7. Dag” by Banke. Cobweb-transparent tonal architecture for three voices that makes the angels rejoice. --- "These angels sure know how to sing, and sometimes even to dance. The trio sounds as if Solborg, Banke and Heebøll breathe through the same lungs. .. the delicate and transparent tonal architecture for three intertwined voices can really make the angels rejoice." ..” - Louise Rosengreen, Dagbladet Information “Early Morning Bells [by Solborg] opens with investigations of guitarsound and timbre by Solborg, until Bjørn Heebøll joins in and the graceful depths of Anders Banke’s bass clarinet leaves me with one word in mind: Wow!…." - Louise Rosengreen, Dagbladet Information The Monk reinterpretations are excellent, substantial and dense. Among the originals, the same applies to "Rigors Remain" and "Longsome", where one is slower and more sparse and the other is more urgent. "Angels" is brought on much more abstract grounds than Ayler himself would have dared; this frees the tune and makes it reach enjoyable heights. Ultimately, this album is worth of attention for its strong coherence and cleverly outlined aesthetics. - Alberto Bazzurro, All About Jazz, Italia

Awards..

..happy to share that I am among the nominees for a Danish Music Award Jazz 2025: “Composer of the Year” for my work with TUNGEMÅL: Confluencia on ILK Music.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Thanks for listening!

Congrats to all nominees. What an awesome crowd! People I studied with, people I have played with and people I have taught ٩( ᐛ )و

Susana, Simon and Ingar: Thanks for your beautiful dedicated work with our music ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ

Jazz Danmarks DMA show is on december 2nd at VEGA.
Have a great day!

TUNGEMÅL is about the quality of our conversations. How do we speak musically, and in general, in different languages? The project seeks to investigate, illustrate and raise awareness of the continuous cross-cultural inter humane debate, towards a more varied and complex perspective of the world. Cherishing diversity and multiple insights. The confluence of knowledge and resources, of our individual voices. A conversation that becomes increasingly important if we are to solve the challenges of our society and species.

The music on “Confluencia” is performed by a wonderful gathering of some of my favourite partners in crime:
Susana Santos Silva · trumpet
Mark Solborg · guitars & electronics
Simon Toldam · piano & keys
Ingar Zach · percussion and vibrating membranes

The album is out on ILK Music. Find the vinyl package at the ILK webshop, Bandcamp or your local vinyl-pusher.
